The Duty Free and Travel retail industry is an extremely important industry today. The surge in the number of people flying and spending time at airports has clearly made it a significant market place. Currently in its fourth decade, The Tax Free World Association (TFWA)exhibition, which was held at Cannes witnessed a total of 6701 visitors—a 6% growth over last year. About 26% of the total business originates from the fragrance or beauty segments.

According to Luciano Bertinelli, CEO Ferragamo Parfums, “the industry is always evolving and growing”. This is Bertinelli`s 20th year at Cannes. He believes that the exhibition is a one-stop platform for brands to meet up with their partners, who gather here from across the world. It is a great opportunity for them to present their new products and understand the year-end results.

Airports are the first touch points, which enable customers to experience any luxury brand. According to Manishi Sanwal, Managing Director, Duty Free Shopping (DFS), “Fragrance and Beauty has been an undersold story in Indian Duty Free space, due to retail space restrictions. The last five years have seen a huge development in the category, especially after the re-opening of airports with world-class ambience in key metros.

The Mumbai Duty Free space at Mumbai’s world-class international airport, has crafted a beauty zone of more than 5,000 sq ft at the ‘departure’ terminal and 1,000 sq ft at ‘arrivals’. The presence of leading brands in a world-class ambience can create a huge growth for the category over the next few years. We foresee beauty as the driving category in the near future”.

Bertinelli firmly believes that the fragrance industry in India has an amazing potential. Many brands like Ferragamo, Davidoff, Azzaro and Versace, who have invested in India affirm that India will be one of the most important markets in the future. At the TFWA exhibition this year, several new trends emerged in the beauty and fragrance segment. Shimmer on nails and eyes and matte lipsticks took the centre stage. Several new ingredients such as bergamot, cinnamon, vetiver and labdanum made a frequent appearance.
