Once a staple in most grandparent’s wardrobe, crochet is now springing up all over the catwalks in the form of stylish maxis, funky vests, crop tops and shorts. This 70s inspired knit lends a semi-sheer look that reveals a hint of skin making any outfit feminine and flirty. With international designers like Emilio Pucci, Chanel, Isabel Marant and Diane von Furstenberg featuring this style in their recent collection, it’s no wonder that Hollywood’s best are endorsing this trend. Actor Zoe Saldana loves flaunting crochet dresses. Singer Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus both like to give a youthful twist to this classic by pairing their neutral crochet outfits with neon- coloured inners.

Designer Priyadarshini Rao whose last collection consisted of crochet detailing says it’s extremely stylish and functional.

“Crochet has potential not just for clothing, but also accessories. It can be made in a variety of yarn blends and combined with beads and stones for a more glamorous look. While in its actual form it is handmade, updated technology has facilitated machine-made versions, which makes it a quicker, and cheaper craft to procure.” She recommends wearing it as a dress, waistcoat, or layered tank over a tunic or as a beach cover-up.

Crochet need not be restricted to western ensembles insists designer Shruti Sancheti who has designed Pakistani-style dresses with this detailing. “Crochet adds an elegant feminine touch to any outfit; it works just as beautifully on a dupatta or sari as on the hemlines of dresses. Further, it’s perfect for our kind of weather as crochet itself is weightless,” says Shruti.

Designer Pria Kataaria Puri feels this is a very chic trend that can be easily aped. “Crochet lace is made out of cotton, so it’s very summer friendly. When teamed with sequins embroidery or given the tie-dye effect it can look very youthful. It’s perfect as a little bolero or short jacket worn with jeans or as an embellishment put on cotton blouses or dresses. A full crochet skirt or gown with lining is very hot this season.”
