Midriffs are in this summer. From crop tops to bandeaus, and bralets, the tummy-baring trend is everywhere. However, what started as a ’90s style (think Britney Spears and Spice Girls), has now evolved into a more sophisticated one. For spring 2013, less is more and by that we mean skin show. Hollywood stars like Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and  Miley Cyrus flaunted the trend  exposing just a sliver of their midriff, pairing their crop tops and bralets with high-waisted pants and skirts adding a touch of class.

Flaunt a fit bod
Designer Pria Kataaria Puri says this is a very wearable trend. “It’s best for someone who’s extremely fit, with a slim waist line and a flat stomach. One can team a solid crop top with a printed skirt or a printed crop top with solid coloured shorts. When teamed with jeans they can get tricky,” she says, adding, “If one is going for a crop top one should not opt for a very deep neck one. Crop tops which are in fashion are the boat neck, Chinese and turtle neck. Avoid exposing your cleavage.”

Different styles

What’s different this year is that crop tops are more in the form of a vintage bralet style, somewhere between a bra and corset length says designer Aniket Satam. “Pair them with normal waisted pants, cossack waistlines, broad waistbands or even classic tennis skirts. Also, high waisted pants and crop tops allow a tiny bit of midriff to show making this trend wearable,” he adds.

Layer up
Layering is important says designer Krishna Mehta. “Wear an inner layer with your crop top, a sheer inner blouse can help cover too much skin show. Another option is to wear it as a vest. Today women are looking for individual pieces that can be worn in different ways, separates are the future of fashion,” she adds.

Versatility
Tops in pastel and bright colours look really good, says designer Astha Narang. “Another option is to go for geometrical and line prints rather than florals. They’re also really versatile, they make for casual wear yet have a glamourous, sexy aspect.”
