With summer melding into spring, runways are abuzz with new styles and trends. It’s the season to wear your fashion on your sleeve as you slip into the hottest trends from the ramp. Today’s fashion is truly a fusion of Indian and international elements. Reveals well known fashion designer Neeta Lulla, “Trends today follow a global format. Over and above this, the country you live in dictates the detailing thus creating an individualistic style statement that is truly aspirational.”

Floral designs promise to be big in the months ahead and lace detailing is taking up the runways by storm. 3D embellishments are intricacies to design, while monochromatic tones add class and elegance. Relaxed sihouettes reflect the relaxed yet stylish feel of summer, while Indian-inspired designs with international cues speak of fashionable fusion. Explains Jinali Sutariya, founder and director, House of Chic, “Fashion trends are derived from the three R’s: red carpet, runway, and real life. This season reflects the ever-changing, multi-faceted and complex moods of today’s consumerism. It explores the resistance of stereotypes and mixes them to challenge conventions. Modern youth and its exciting energy fuel the trends this season.”

Accessorize

The key to keeping your accessories en vogue this summer is opting for interesting, individual pieces that make a statement and reflect your individuality. Lace and ribbon makes a comeback and flower power is the way to go.

Explains Sutariya, “Gone are the days when accessories used to be known as a symbol of wealth and went with the notion of ‘the more you flaunt it, the better it is’. Today, the Indian connoisseur is gradually waking up to the trend of wearing accessories not just for an ostentatious purpose but for expressing mood and personality.”

This season’s trend is all about pretty footwear. Explains Bajaj, “This spring shoes with a sporty appeal are replacing the conventional "pretty" ones. Be it lace up, mesh detailing or rubber, your regular heels have been transformed for an athletic feel. From sneakers with wedge heels to lace up booties, sporty is the new chic.”

Jewellery rides the floral wave as well, as delicate, floral themed jewellery makes its mark in designer collections. Says Sutariya, “House of Chic has come up with beautiful floral jewellery which includes very feminine and light colour-coordinated rings, earrings and bracelets. These are made using delicate colorful stones and gems, which give a very rich feel to the collection. They are available in different colours like sea blue, lilac, pink, bottle green, etc.”

Designer details

The devil, as they say, lies in the detail. This season, fringe detailing is taking the world of fashion by storm. Observes Kresha Bajaj, fashion designer, Koëcsh, “The biggest trend standing out this spring is the fringe detailing. If fringe brings back the memories of the iconic 20s flapper dress, then let me tell you, it’s bigger and better in 2014! Moving away from fabrics, fringes are now crafted with unconventional materials like beads, chains and sequins which make them stand out this season. Bold and edgy fringe detailing on jackets, tops, dress and even capes and collars is the thing to watch out for.”

Detailing is also reflected in 3D embellishments that are being seen on designer creations.
Explains Bajaj, “As I have love for detailing and embellishments, I cannot help but point another major trend I see this season is 3D embellishments. The use of intricate techniques like applique and cutwork adorned with rich rhinestones and multi-layer beads give garments a beautifully sculpted 3 dimensional feel.”

Colour wise

The season ahead is all about the classic hues. This summer, white is the colour to watch: classic, refreshing and ever-elegant. The shades and hues of white also promise to be popular choices. Reveals fashion designer Shruti Sancheti, ““The keywords for summer are pretty, feminine and fresh. The key colour trend this season would be the colour white and its various hues like ecru, cream, off-white and ivory. These, blended with other colours, would be the perfect foil for harsh summers. The colour white and its various hues looks regal, summery, fresh and soothing.”

Ditch the excessive neons for a stark monochromatic look. Monochromes make a mature, self-assured style statement of sorts. Says Sutariya, “Monochrome is back in style too and can definitely be used for florals as well. It brings a very edgy side to the usual feminine side. House of Chic has made jewellery using black and white gems and giving a change to the usual.”

Prints

A major trend to watch this season is prints—whether floral, blocked, digital, screen or graphic. Florals pack in a punch with their feminine wiles and playful prints. Explains Sutariya, “Beautiful in apparel, floral flows into accessories, just like how it cascades in color. The detailed look adds visual interest. Floral patterns bring out a very elegant and feminine side on the ramp. They are usually interpreted in bright colors like green, red, yellow, orange, etc. Less is no longer more this season and heavy floral work is in with colours ranging from neon to citrus bright colours to monochrome with prints like flowers, leaves and roses.”

Neeta Lulla’s upcoming collection reflects this trend as well, albeit with a Indo-Western twist. Says Lulla, “Aztec motifs tropical prints monochromatic color schemes are the inspirations for my upcoming collection. Embroidery in badla creates that Indian inspiration. The key is in keeping the style simple and silhouettes understated—an Indo-Western line that is easy to dress up and down to coordinate and with various other garments creating an individualistic look of the wearer, for the wearer. This is the philosophy and trend that i am looking at for the consumer of today with diverse lifestyles.”
