Frankenstein:

English author Mary Shelley’s novel is apt for first time horror readers. It talks about an eccentric scientist, Victor Frankenstein, whose strange experiment to create a being out of assorted body parts comes to life. A monster is born. The book is about the terrifying creature chasing Victor and taking revenge against him  - killing his brother and other gruesome stuff. The scariest part is the hide-and seek with his creator and Mary’s eerie description. Frankenstein is considered to be one of the earliest science-fiction novels to have been written.

Dracula:

If your idea of vampires is restricted to the Twilight series,  don’t bother picking this one up. Starkly different from Edward Cullen and his romantic escapades, the book delves into supernatural powers and diabolical ambitions of vampires in detail. The novel touches on themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions and colonialism. It largely revolves around Jonathan Harker, an English lawyer who meets Count Dracula in the eastern European country of Transylvania. Bram Stoker’s in depth description of vampires feeding off their prey and later being set free through slaying rituals will send shivers down your spine.

Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories:

For young adults who want to dabble with this genre, this book is what comes to mind first. The author, popular for his children’s books, manages to disrupt your thoughts. While there are scarier books to spook you out, Dahl’s briliant matter-of-fact style of writing makes it all seem so possible. The book is a compilation of short stories, so well-written they jump from fiction to fact in a jiffy and make you wonder if all this really happened. You hope not.

The Shining:

With his blood-curdling writing and strange plots, Stephen King can easily be called the hero of horror. With several of his books dedicated solely to this genre, it was tough to pick just one for this list. The Shining is King’s third book. It revolves around Jack, a recovering alcoholic and an aspiring actor. Horrifying incidents unfold when he accepts a position as the off-season caretaker at a historic hotel. His son, Danny, possesses ‘the shining’ - psychic abilities that allow him to see the scary past of the hotel. Doctor Sleeps, the sequel to the 1977 book,  came out last year.
