“From childhood, I have seen alcoholism in my family,” says Bhanu Suresh Babu, founder of Concern, a Chennai-based alcohol and drug de-addiction centre for men and women. The impact growing up around alcoholics had on Bhanu led her to founding Concern in 2008.

Concern is a rehabilitation centre where patients from all walks of life come for help. “We treat them physically, mentally, spiritually,” says 54 year-old Bhanu, who is a psychologist by profession. They are admitted to the centre for 15-21 days or more and are subjected to psychotherapy sessions. These sessions are conducted free of cost. However, the admittees are expected to pay for food, accommodation and medicines.

Now Bhanu wants to scale up her activities and move to bigger premises. For this, she is raising funds on the crowdfunding site, Milaap. She is going to use the money to develop her organisation and improve the infrastructure. “When a woman’s husband is drinking, brother is drinking, she is emotionally affected. I want her to come out of that. I want people to know that help is available,” concludes Bhanu.
