Three young achievers from the Westcoast talk to dna…

Shooting star
Former national shooter and coach Vishwajeet Shinde’s 13-year-old daughter Yashika is a role model for kids her age. A student of Bombay Scottish School, Yashika has competed in several inter-school competitions and has bagged medals for her rifle shooting prowess.

“I started learning to shoot two years ago,” says Yashika, who is being coached by her father.

Being the daughter of a well-known national level shooter would have granted her immediate access into the competitive inner circles of rifle shooting, but that didn’t stop Yashika from pulling all stops to make a mark for herself.

She puts in around three hours of practice on a daily basis! “I don’t let my studies suffer. Post my practice sessions, I only concentrate on my studies and homework,” she adds. It isn’t easy juggling studies and a demanding hobby. But Yashika has no problems living up to (and exceeding) expectations. She hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a shooter at an international level. Another feather in her cap is her being featured in a Kellogs print advertisement.

Bitten by the acting bug
Armaan Verma, a student of Billabong High School, enjoyed a relatively ordinary life until 2011, when life took a complete turn for him with the release of sci-fi film RA.One, in which he starred as the son of Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor. While film critics raved endlessly about his performance in the film, his friends, too, are very happy to have a star amongst them.

“It was like a dream come true for me. My favourite actor has always been Shah Rukh Khan, so I was thrilled to know that I was on-board and would star as his son in the film,” exclaims Verma, who candidly admits that he hopes to grow up and act in films just like SRK.

Shakespearean delight
Theatre came naturally to producer JD Majethia’s daughter, Kesar. Since she popped onto the acting scene, she has been making progress steadily. In 2010, she starred as Chakki Parekh in Khichdi: The Movie.

“Theatre is in my genes. That’s why I love being part of plays,” she says. A student of Oberoi International School, 13-year-old Kesar has acted in many plays conducted in her school including musicals. “My favourite being Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in which I played a pivotal role,” she gushes, “I enjoy singing and love being a part of musicals. My parents often talk of their days as young theatre actors. It is through their stories that I have understood theatre better.”
