It has been a good year for beauty with various innovations making looking good easy. From spray on nail polishes to hands-free hair dryers, there was much reason to cheer. However, there were also some make-up, hair and nail trends, that made us cringe. From whacky beauty challenges (100 layer challenge) to too much of a good thing (glitter and contouring), read on to know our list of trends that we hope end with this year.

The 100 layers challenge

This trend was one of the most out there for several reasons. To begin with, it involved the user applying a 100 layers (literally) of product — whether it was foundation, liquid lipstick or even nail polish. Most of us already know the harmful effects of constantly wearing make-up, so why would one wear 100 layers of it? Beauty vlogger Jenna  Mourey aka Jenna Marbles posted her Ultimate 100 Coats of Things Video, which gained over 11 million views, and also took seven-and-a-half hours to complete. Talk about a waste of time.

Contouring every body part

Contouring is a great way to slim down a round face and enhance cheekbones. This year, though, saw way too many kinds of contouring trending. First, it was the legs, make-up was used to make the limbs seem longer and leaner. Then it was the neck, painting the backside of one’s neck to look slimmer. And finally came ear contouring, which caught on after Kylie Jenner showed everyone how it’s done. Contouring overload, anyone?

Bizarre nail art

Nails were a much used and abused canvas this year. While seasonal trends like Donald Trump painted nails or Halloween faces were fine, there were others that involved bizarre concepts. One had baby scorpions glued on, while another had pom poms adorning tips. There were also fur nails and botany inspired ones — all of which were impractical and strange. Can we go back to the good old polish days?

Glitter overdone

There’s no better way to add a glam touch than glitter. That is unless you overdo it. This year saw glitter on everything, from hair — glitter roots and braids — to eyes and even brows and freckles. Glitter lips have found many fans as has glitter strobing which gained popularity a couple of weeks ago. At the Paris Fashion week, we saw a model at the Yves Saint Laurent show with glitter nipples. Enough already!

Penis eyeliner and beauty products

Recently genitalia-inspired beauty trends have surprisingly become a rage. Bitch Slap Cosmetics launched metallic highlighters embossed with designs of a penis and a vagina. There were also penis-shaped lipsticks and just when we thought that would be the last, along came penis liner. Asia Brautigam, 19, from California started the trend by posting a picture of her design. Soon enough beauty fans recreated the look and it was all over social media. We would rather stick to the classic cat eye, thank you very much.
