This weekend, Alliance Française has something creative and something really funny lined up for you. The institute is hosting 5 Elements, an exhibition that brings together five unique artists — Dinakaran Kaliappan (element: fire) — a graphic artist who depicts a potpourri of fiery ideas; Spoorthy Murali (element: water) presents languid elephants and vintage cars in watercolours; Megha Vishwanath (element: earth) re-narrates classics combining traditional and digital styles; Varsha Raju (element: wind) brings forth youthful, creative gusts through charcoal and line art and Saagar Tulshan (element: ether) showcases zestful short films and installations. On Sunday, you can also catch the play Pint Sized Love by ASAP, a Chennai-based theatre group. The play is a concoction of four rib-tickling short skits that deal with topics ranging from relationships to breakups to epiphanies.

A Himalayan statement
The majestic Himalayas play inspiration for designer Ritu Kumar’s Winter- Festive ’13 collection. The collection, that opened to positive reviews at the Lakme Fashion Week in August this year, is a beautiful mélange of contemporary hand-woven fabrics, cultural motifs and weaves. Always an advocate of the use of indigenous textiles, Ritu Kumar this time around has tried creating magic with hand-woven loomed fabrics, Bhutanese tangkhas, prayer flags, woven silks, Lycra jersey and Kashmiri Jamavar motifs. The vibrant and contemporary collection comprises silk shawls, long-sleeved coat dresses, kurtas, stylish trousers, leggings, kira (Bhutanese wrap around skirt), dresses, kaftans, wrap jackets and capes.

A veena player who was born to a family of violinists. A violinist who’d aspired to become a cricketer. A mridangam player who planted a jackfruit tree just so he could make his own mridangam from it. A morsing, congo, banjo, you-name-it player who went about with a musical instrument in his pocket. Every musician has a story. See these stories come alive at Strings Attached — A Children’s Special being hosted by Bhoomija. A concert created especially for children by the couple Jayanthi (Veena) and Kumaresh (Violin), the evening promises to take you down memory lane with a musical story-telling session. And accompanying Jayanthi and Kumaresh in this delightful pursuit are Anantha Krishna (mridangam), Pramath Kiran (morsing) and Aarti Aane (stories).

Anything to do with cricket is a hit with our audience. And keeping this in mind, ESPNcricinfo along with Homegrown Comedy is bringing down cult writer and political satirist, Andy Zaltzman, to perform live in the city this weekend. A favourite among cricket enthusiasts, the award-winning stand-up comedian’s style marries India’s first love, cricket, with humour, India’s second love. The theme of the comedy tour is Cricket vs. The World, and through a range of witty analogies and inferences to politics and the economy, Zaltzman is sure to leave you amused with his verdict on which is more likely to be missed, should the world end.
