The festival of Navratra starts today. It is dedicated to Maa Durga, who is the benevolent form of deity Shiva. She bestows divine energy and helps people to abide dharma, beget wealth, fufill desires and moksha. Mythologically, it is also known as Nav Greh Utsav and festival of victory. It is believed that Lord Rama prayed to Ma Bhagwati before embarking for Lanka to fight the demon Ravana. People go on fast during these holy days. These days are considered powerful for spiritual upliftment. Each night of Navratra is dedicated to one form of mother.

1. Mata Shailputri

Daughter of Parvatraj (King of the Mountain) Himalaya. She married Shankar and gave birth to Ganesha (The remover of obstacles) and Kartikeya (The God of War); dedicated to Rahu.
Mantra: Aum Bhraam Bhreem Bhrom Se Rahveye Nameh.
Donation: Black and white til. 
Recitation: Nine malas.
Benefit: You overcome general obstacles of life

2. Mata Brahmachaarini 

She gives the world the message of pure love. This day is dedicated to the Moon.
Mantra: Aum Shram Shrim Shrom Se Chandraye Nameh.
Donation: Rice. 
Recitation: Five malas.
Benefit: Controls depression and mental illness.

3. Mata Chandraghanta 

She establishes justice. She wears the Crescent Moon on her head; dedicated to the Sun.
Mantra: Aum Hran Hrin Hron Se Suraye Nameh.
Donation: Wheat. 
Recitation: Nine malas.

4. Mata Kushmaanda

5. Skand Mata

6. Mata Kaatyayini 

Constantly fights against evil and devious entities; dedicated to Mars.
Mantra: Aum Kram Krim Krom Se Bhomaye Nameh.

Recitation: Nine malas.
Benefit: Self-confidence and overcoming Manglik Dosha.

7. Mata Kaalraatri 

She killed a demon called Raktabeej. (He had the power to produce a demon from every drop of blood, that fell from his body. Mother eventually licked the blood before it could touch the ground, and thus overpowered him; dedicated to Saturn.
Mantra: Aum Praam Preem Prom Se Shanchraye Nameh.
Donation: Mustard oil. 
Recitation: Eight malas.
Benefit: Upliftment of spiritualism.

8. Mata Chaamunda

She killed two demons, called Chanda and Munda and reestablished order. Mata Maha-Gauri who also rid the world of evil forces; dedicated to Ketu.
Mantra: Aum Ke Ketaye Nameh.
Donation: Seven grains. 
Recitation: Four malas. 
Benefit: Settling abroad and journeys.

9. Mata Sidhidaarti 

She is a treasure house of yantra tantra (mystic powers) and gyaan (knowledge); dedicated to Mercury.
Mantra: Aum Braam Breem Braum Se Budhaye Nameh.
Donation: Moong daal. 
Recitation: Five malas.
Benefit: Studies and education.
