As we get into 2018, it’s time to usher in some new beauty trends. While matte lip colours ruled all of last year, lip gloss will make a comeback this time. Hair in its natural state will be celebrated but experimentation will continue when it comes to colour. Social media and celebrity-inspired skin treatments will also be in demand. Beauty experts across various fields tell us what we can look forward to...

RETURN OF THE ’70S

Hair is definitely more natural in look and feel. Easy and relaxed styles will be popular this year, says Adhuna Bhabani, founder and creative director, BBLUNT. “There is a strong influence from the ’70s. What will rule is natural texture. Hair will always be easier to maintain if it’s worn in its natural form. You can use styling products and finishing products to help enhance it,” she explains. In terms of colours, there will always be a certain percentage of people who will wear the more outrageous, quirky hues and yet another pool of people who will play it much safer. Last year, we saw unicorns and rainbow-inspired hair and rumour has it, that Pink Flamingo is going to be big in 2018. Dry shampoos will still be the go to, quick-fix product for people with fast-paced lifestyles. Given that the look and feel of the trends this time is more on less weighty products; lightweight hairsprays and styling sprays that leave the hair looking soft and natural will be the focus in the year ahead. “We recently created some stylised looks for our campaign that are inspired by the current trends. Our own version of the popular Bardot, the B-Boy bowl cut, the Merbraid, the Jagerbun, Spacebuns and the Disco Quickie are perfect to try out at your next party,” she adds.

GO BOLD WITH WINE RED

From bold over-drawn lips, winged eyeliners and long lashes, and pink cheeks, old will be new for 2018. Vintage will come back to power, so wine and blood red colours will be the hottest trends for 2018, says Renuka Pillai, celebrity make-up expert, AVON India. “Long lashes and thick winged eyeliners will grab eyeballs this season. Staple colours, red and pink, in their bolder versions will rock the make-up trends this year. Minimal make-up with pink and coral blush cheeks. Straight from the runway, orange colour on the cheeks will rule the trend. Metallic eyes without eyeliners, will stand out this party season. While matte lip colours will not be washed out, gloss is set to make a comeback,” she feels.

Nail art is going to be big this year. “The Checkered French manicure look is ultra-chic for its simple yet fantastic style. The classic 1960s vibe of the pattern can look terrific if done with the right choice of colours. Fishnet design is incredibly fun and easy to do. The ‘Madonna’ vibe of this pattern gives an enigmatic and sensuous look with a whole lot of possibilities of various designs,” says Farheen Shaikh, beauty expert at NailSpa Experience. A graffiti manicure is a cool option for college-going kids and matches perfectly with street fashion. Those looking for something more minimal can opt for water decals. These statement nails are literally just press-on stickers, glossed over with clear nail polish.

FILLERS WILL BE POPULAR

This year will likely continue the growth of the cosmetic industry with more people opting for holistic skin treatments. Better machines will provide sustained non-surgical facelifts over single session with almost no down time. Cooltech, Coolsculpt or newer entries like Sculpsure and Vanquish will continue to see increasing demand due to more people desiring toned physiques. The use of Korean threads in scalp, hair stem cells and robotic hair transplant surgeries have already taken a leap in 2017 and will peak in 2018, feels Dr Apratim Goel, dermatologist and laser surgeon, Cutis Skin Solution. “Thanks to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, treatments such as lip augmentation are likely to top 2018’s popularity list along with fillers on other parts of the face for compensating volume loss. Fillers have evolved beyond the original hyaluronic acid to others that bring greater specificity and nuance, so that skilled injectors would be able to further optimise results. Instead of simply using scented soaps and applying traditional facials, medical facials use prescription strength ingredients like Retin-A, Vitamin C, and Alpha and Beta Hydroxy acids thus providing much better efficacy. These combined with laser technologies will continue their upward trajectory. Thanks to Insta trends like #Sundayfacials, face masks are here to stay and will be more popular than exotic ingredients like charcoal, wine, caviar and snail secretions,” adds Dr Goel.
