Having grown up with several teachers in my family, I have seen students walk up to my grandfathers, my uncle, and my mother, with a twinkle of gratitude in their eyes. They come and touch my mother's feet, tell their kids about how difficult it was to give her a satisfactory explainer on Harivanshrai Bachchan's Madhushala, or how easy it was to understand her interpretation of Raheem or Kabir.

So when I came across Gavin Aung Than's illustration of American slam poet Taylor Mali's poem 'What Teachers Make', I could well imagine my mother giving the described finger to people who made fun of her profession.

Gavin is a Melbourne-based cartoonist who left his job as a graphic designer at a newspaper and started zenpencils.com. It's a place you'll love getting lost in, exploring Gavin's creative interpretations of inspiring quotes by stalwarts from various fields.

Taylor Mali's 'What Teachers Make' was illustrated by Gavin two years ago, but relevant even today as it talks about how a good teacher makes so much difference in a student's life.

This Teacher's Day, take a moment to realise why your teacher loved you or punished you. Or let Gavin's comic and Taylor Mali's poem help you understand.
