The Chef’s Special Chicken Xiao Long Bao was brought to the table. The server asked us to bite the top of the dough gently to let the hot steam escape. We drank the soup, poured ginger and soya sauce on top of the soup dumpling and in one quick movement, it was in our mouth. And just like that, we were rewarded with a rich, savoury dim sum.

This authentic experience of devouring the delicious Chicken Xiao Long Bao is currently available at the China XO pop-up at The Great Wall at The Leela in Andheri. The ten-day pop-up that kicked off on July 22 is on till July 31, showcasing the best of China XO, the award-winning Chinese speciality restaurant at The Leela Palace Chennai. Bringing the special menu all the way from there are Dim Sum Master Chef Chee Soon Hoong and Duck Chef Sylvester Lepcha. There is a whole range of dim sums, carefully curated set menus for both vegetarians as well as non-vegetarians and signature creations, including the Peking Duck.

Biting into the delicious Chicken Puff, we couldn’t help but wonder how that’s part of the dim sum menu, but Chef Sashi Kumar, Junior sous chef, The Leela Mumbai, explained that dim sums come in a variety of forms – baked, deep fried, pan fried, steamed and more. With its soft and flaky exterior made of wheat flour and dough and a slight honey glaze on top, the chicken puff was a delicious affair. Lobster goes beautifully well with truffles and so, the Lobster Truffle with the addition of the truffle oil and the slightly sweet dough made for a tasty combination. The Lamb and Lemongrass dim sum was, similarly, a unique combination because of the coming together of some flavourful ingredients.

The Peking Duck Fried Rice and the Wok-tossed fish in XO sauce for our mains were finished in no time, even though we had quite a fill of those heavenly dim sums. We finished the meal with honey noodles and ice cream, a sweet end to a truly delicious dinner and the taste of the Orient right here in Mumbai.
