This style chameleon can easily escort you from a golf brunch to a night out on tiles. With interesting layering and colour blocking techniques — this can inject an enviable nonchalance into any look. From Ferrari red to British racing green to its latest avatars which come with quirky slogans — this closet staple has evolved over the years and offers myriad dressing options to fashion-conscious men. Coming in ultra-comfy fabric options like knitted and piqué cotton — they are ideal to beat the city’s muggy weather too.

Tonal layering

“Currently the tonal styling is en vogue instead of contrasts. The traditional preppy way was to layer it with a biker jacket. However, ensure that while layering your polo shirt with a blazer, it is in the same family of colours. Say combine a lemon yellow polo with a faded yellow blazer or wear an orange tee inside with a rust blazer over it. Complete this look with a pair of beige trousers for a semi-formal event. Always, leave the first two buttons open,” says designer and stylist Kunal Rawal.

Throw a blazer — matching or contrasting — over the polo to smarten up a little while still keeping that casual edge. “Loafers suit it best. A jacket or blazer presents an entry-level opportunity to work double prints, whilst you can also contrast the polo shirt with a pocket square in the left hand pocket,” says designer Rocky S.

For a casual day wear look, it is best to wear a half-sleeve polo in a brighter tone and detailed collar with a cut-sleeve light cardigan and a relaxed pair of trousers.

“For the more daring personality, adding a pop of neon green to yellow or a purple polo can be very appealing. For the undertoned soft look, a round neck T-shirt with light coloured polo can provide the desired chic effect,” says Rajesh Jain, CEO & Director, Lacoste India.

Popping the collar?
“Our young brand L!VE also offers polo with detailing on the collars that are visible when it’s popped,” says  Rajesh. However, not many are able to pull off this look and some feel that the collar can’t be worn up while layering with a formal jacket. “Polos look smart and classy when worn in its own simple style,” says Rocky S.

Evening pairing
“Dress up your polo with a formal suit and a pair of English style brogues to a cocktail event. It is best to wear an Italian fit polo, neatly tucked and complement it with a dark belt. For a more dressed up look, you could team your polo with a well-fitted blazer and tapered dark denims or khakis,” says Rajesh.
