The Pre-Fall 2019 presentations by Proenza Schouler, Calvin Klein, Jil Sander and Tory Burch have brought back the focus on dress over trousers layering. Championed by the likes of Victoria Beckham and Sonam K Ahuja, this 90s offshoot is here to stay. This pairing looks impossibly chic, keeps one’s legs warmer than tights, lends dresses that zany tomboyish touch and gives a new character to your closet by morphing a dress into a top. The key to master this layering technique is embracing tailored silhouettes — it could be a shift over a pair of tailored pants or throwing an A-line skirt over skinnies. Style the shirt like a dress and team it with your pants.

MIX THE FABRICS

Use soft fabrics and make sure it’s not too fitted. Stylist Isha Bhansali says, “I love Victoria Beckham’s take on it. A tunic or a long jacket layered over pants looks chic. Add polish to the ensemble by adding a pair of heels. It could be a long jacket or a summer trench thrown over a pair of slim-fit pants. Go for sneakers if you have the confidence to pull it off.”

A NEW DIMENSION TO LAYERING

For Pre-Fall 19, layering has gone a notch above and it’s absolutely fine to experiment with varying silhouettes and shapes and to create a unique layered look. Designer  Aniket Satam says, “Think of long line tunics with flared pants or simple shifts paired over bell bottoms. One may colour block it but avoid too much of contrast and pattern clash for this particular trend. Trousers with defined hemline such as flared, trumpet, pleated works well for this layering trend and avoid anything baggy on the waist line. Indians are quite familiar with this kind of layering as we’ve been wearing shararas, ghararas and Farshi pants with kurti tops forever now.”
