Style Hunter: Colour blocking emerges to be a key trend at New York Fashion Week

Whoever thought that Fall Winter clothing is dreary and life-less, has been clearly living under a rock. While one usually associates Spring Summer pieces with bright and vibrant hues and Fall Winter is synonymous with a moody palette of black, grey and navy.

However, fashion trends over the last five years, have challenged that dated impression. One sees more statement-making tints and shades for fall months than one’s ever seen before. A wild, sprightly and flamboyant play of shades was seen at the recently concluded New York Fashion Week, which exemplified the prowess of smart and sassy colour-blocking. Always the moodsetter of the season, designer Tom Ford paired a velvet evening jacket with a pair of aubergine pants, Prabal Gurung presented solid primary hues — sending out red pantsuit layered over a yellow turtleneck and tying the waist of a red flirty dress with a lemon sash.

Staying true to its métier, Sies Marjan combined orange and pink like a lethal cocktail and Carolina Herrera’s runway saw a tea-length pink top coat showcased with a pair of yellow pants. Tibi too couldn’t avoid the visually-arresting appeal of colour play as they layered a lilac roller neck with a pale orange grid print blazer. Creating a skirmish between primary hues and mismatching pastels — designers heralded a fiery and high-spirited autumn. It’s a given that these runway looks will create visual upheaval in a flurry of editorials, besides causing pap frenzy on the red carpet.
