Couture is about that unbelievable fantasy which offers us an escape from the harsh everyday realities. This Spring Summer 19 season saw designers pushing the envelope when it came to visually-arresting accessories detailing.

Head-dresses and berets with statement-making accents lent gravitas to the ensembles showcased on the runways of Chanel, Armani Prive, Schiaparelli and Givenchy. Chanel’s showstopper bride had a sparkly swimming cap attached with a long tulle train and Dior’s circus-themed runway had mesh enveloping models’ faces, Armani Privé, Schiaparelli and Givenchy too opted for theatrical head berets and embellishments. Designer Zara Umrigar loves this trend and she has incorporated it into her upcoming collection as well. “The runway at couture shows has seen a lot of dramatic headgear over the years that hasn’t necessarily translated into the ready to wear space. It’s definitely more suited to a bolder approach but I do think the more classic ones such as glamorous hats, berets, embellishments and trailing veils are ones that are more wearable,” says Zara.

The Indian connect

Looking at the local scenario, headgears are mostly seen in the form of equestrian-inspired fascinators at the race course. However, it’s hard to see these headpieces translated into street style. Designer Ridhi Mehra observes, “The only statement headgear we see in real life is at Derbys in the form of couture hats. So, I certainly don’t see the sparkly swimming caps being worn on the streets. However, embellished/bejewelled head bands and pins, if styled well can certainly add a touch of glam to your look!
