Web series like Stranger Things and The Crown set in the past decades resurrect old-world aesthetic thus inspiring fashionistas
From The Crown to Stranger Things, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel to The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story — the web series currently being aired have managed to inspire a nostalgic catharsis with their authentic period looks and beautifully realised settings. While Stranger Things and Dynasty recreate ’80s with big hair and power shoulders, Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story reignites ’90s Versace like Baroque prints and leather dresses. In fact, Dynasty, which is currently being aired on Netflix, sees au courant Balmain and Gucci pieces employed to express the protagonists’ emotions while Miss Fisher’s, on the other hand, celebrates the ’20s flapper style.
Designer Pria Kataaria Puri is currently hooked on to The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and The Crown. “I like watching shows set in the ’40s and ’50s when women actually dressed and went all out. I was watching The Crown and I was intrigued to see how the Queen ties her headscarf under her chin. I love the sophistication of that era — red lips, hair at the back and shoulders — all of that inspires me,” says Pria.
BRIT CHIC VIBE
While Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge and Peaky Blinders had brought back the focus on flapper dresses, double-breasted tailoring and headgear, The Crown has made aristocratic style a talking point in chic corridors.
Jewellery designer Suhani Parekh, who’s following the series, observes that it takes forward the Brit chic cool brought to the forefront by Downton Abbey. “The Crown is rather contemporary and not far behind — be it the silhouettes or the make-up,” says she. Another show which has a distinctive period look is Outlander, set in the 18th century Scotland. “It’s like browsing through history of fashion books,” Parekh adds.
A TRIP TO PAST DECADES
These web series have acquired a cult status and become an integral part of our pop culture. A die-hard Stranger Things fan, designer Aniket Satam says, “From the preppy striped T-shirts of Stranger Things boys to the aristocratic femininity of The Crown — these shows have taken fashionistas on a sepia-tinted trip to the past decades.”
Whether its Steve Harrington’s big hair or Dustin Henderson’s mullet — teenagers overseas have gone crazy reviving and mimicking such street style hair-dos from the decade of unapologetic excess.
