In this digital age, it is hard to imagine that there are some people who don’t carry cellphones. While most of us can’t go 20 minutes without checking our devices, there are some stars who have opted to remain unplugged altogether. From Elton John to Tom Cruise, here are the various personalities who haven’t got onto the smartphone brigade.

Ed Sheeran

The Shape of You hitmaker unlike other 20-year-olds prefers to keep away from social media and doesn’t own a phone. Ed recently marked the second year ‘anniversary’ of his digital detox by reposting his Instagram post that he had shared back in 2015. He had written then, “Hello all. I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while, I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed...’’ He said that his decision to forego his phone has helped him reduce his stress levels.

Elton John

Last year, the musician revealed that he doesn’t own a phone and depends on hubby David Furnish to run his Instagram page while his office looks after his Twitter account. When asked on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, by host Jimmy Kimmel, “You can afford a phone, right?” the singer replied, “I just don’t want one. I Instagram things but David does that for me. I am a luddite.” He’s said to own an iPad for Skyping with the kids when he’s not with them.

Vince Vaughn

The actor doesn’t believe in carrying a mobile as he feels that it makes him too accessible to others. Vince once said in an interview, “I don’t like them, I don’t use them. I like to be in the moment with the people I am with and I find them a distraction. And I quite like sitting by myself and thinking sometimes. I don’t always have that much to say to people.” When not at home, he usually borrows a phone from his friends.

Tom Cruise

Tom prefers to lead the simple life by not owning a smartphone nor having an email ID. He had once said in an interview, “I have no iPhone, no mobile, no email address, no watch, no jewellery, no wallet. I simply want to be with my children and make movies.” Many believe this is due to his involvement with Scientology.

Shailene Woodley

The Divergent actress believes mobile phones in fact cause communication gaps and since she doesn’t own one, she has found herself interacting much more with people. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Shailene said, “I’m not a big technology person. I don’t even have a smart phone. I don’t even have a cell phone! The more you get away from all the technological buzz, the more freedom you have.”

Sarah Jessica Parker

The Sex And The City star is not a fan of phone calls but keeps a phone to respond to emails. Sarah had explained her decision to detox from cellphones as, “I don’t because I don’t like being behind in both phone calls and emails. So I chose emails because when you’re on a set you can carefully and sneakily check a BlackBerry, but you can’t return a phone call. Hearing ‘Your voicemail is full’ is horrifying to me.”

Tyra Banks

When she had her baby last year, Tyra found herself needing time away from her phone. While she couldn’t give up her phone altogether, she has reduced the apps. During an appearance at a conference, she shared, “I took email off of my phone, so now I just text and do Facebook.”
