In the wake of the pandemic, we wanted to get the views of an expert who would be able to give a concise and holistic view of the situation without much ado.

And it so happens that a business leader we've been pursuing for quite some time finally agreed to share his insights on the same.

We are talking about Ali Merchant - multi-millionaire, philanthropist, life coach, and the Founder and CEO of AM Infoweb, India's leading Health Information Management Outsourcing company. We bring to you an excerpt from the interview.

How has the pandemic affected people as a whole?

"I like the fact that you asked about people as a whole and not just about life on the professional front because personal and professional circumstances are interrelated to a great extent and together contribute towards the growth of an individual. What affects the economy more than consumer preferences and their ability to spend? With social distancing, work-from-home culture, and salary cuts, the common man has shifted his focus from luxurious living to minimalism. So, it's logical to say if people become disinterested in products and services that do not add value to their minimalistic approach, they don't care for them, eventually affecting market trends."

Could you elaborate specifically on the personal challenges of a professional in this scenario?

Merchant revealed, "Recently, I came across many professionals drowning under stress due to uncertain job circumstances and changing role dynamics. As you already know about my inclination towards helping people, I am overly concerned about those who hesitate to express their mental dilemmas and subsequently become disillusioned. This is the time that calls for mentorship and guidance initiatives by employers to address such issues or risk losing valuable human capital and productivity.

But I would also stress the idea of choosing your own mentor, someone who is reliable and has the expertise to guide you in the right direction. It could be someone in your family, neighborhood, friend circle, colleague, or senior from your workplace. It's as simple as that!"

Is mentorship a self-sufficient solution?

He says, "I was getting to it, mentorship is just the first step. The changing role dynamics due to the pandemic and urgent digitalization initiatives have also called in for a lot of reskilling and upskilling which is truly intimidating for both, employees and employers alike. If, as employers, we invest in efforts to support our extended family to cope with all pandemic related changes and upgrades with respect to future prospects, we can rightly expect them to show the willingness to change. As they say, 'where there is a will, there is a way'."

An age-old adage still true to the time, we agree.

Lastly, he added, "Always own an ever-evolving mind with the right attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to ethics, come pandemic or prosperity."

That last piece of advice is sure to stay in the minds of all who read this article. Ali Merchant has once again in his singular style imparted invaluable knowledge. And we can vouch that it's career advice which will be treasured for life.
