“Follow your heart.” We have all grown up listening to this and continue to hear this around us—at home, office, social gatherings, personality development workshops etc. In my experience, the choice between the mind and the heart has never been easy. Not because we can't follow the heart, but because we allow ample room for 'intellectual reasoning, logic and rationality' to shape our life and decisions. But let's consider some reasons why the heart should rule over the mind.

1. The heart is in tune with the Universe. It is your real self. It is what you are. It is what the small atoms in your body truly want you to do. We often don't tune in to our heart because it is filled with pain, hurt and other emotions that drain our energy. The head is practical and analytical and is often driven by fear. Your head will tell you what needs to be done to remain safe in the world – to get the money you want, the approval you crave and the predictability you think you need.
Every time you try to follow your heart, the mind will thwart your actions. But the trick is to not internalise the messages sent by your mind. Just watch the thoughts, witness it, observe it and when the mind finds that it's not getting enough attention, it will go back to sleep. And that's when you heart will take over.

2. It is a journey, a lifelong one. If you have been living a life that is not driven by heart, the decision to do the opposite will initially turn your world upside down. That's when your fears and insecurities will stare at you in the eye. It may be scary, but remember that the heart will only guide you to do what's best for you. Sometimes, following your heart may mean that you have to go against what your family wants for you, or what your friends expect of you. It may mean forgoing the approval you received from always doing what others wanted you to do. It will require you to be different, to do things differently. It will mean learning to listen to a deep inner voice, rather than the loud forceful voice of the outer world. The heart is your inner world, and let the outer world be a reflection of this inner world.

3.  To connect
The ego often gets in the way of true connections with other people. It is our ego that gets in the way of our saying the important things, like, "I’m sorry," "I miss you," "I love you." So when we let go of our ego, let people into our hearts, and begin to share our vulnerabilities, our fears, our authentic selves, we create space for others to do the same. When we embrace our flaws and imperfections, we realise that we aren't alone, and we begin to connect on a level that is impossible to feel just with our eyes, or ears, or ego. We connect on a level that we must feel with our hearts.

4. To find our true path
The heart has reasons that reason cannot understand. It has reasons that the mind cannot understand. And it has reasons that society, friends, and even ourselves cannot fully understand. But if we don’t follow our hearts, we will often spend the rest of our lives wishing that we did. Our passions — those moments, experiences, and people that feed our soul and make our hearts beat, don’t just go away if we don’t follow them. They fester and eat away at our worthiness. Follow your passions, find your true path, then follow it with all your heart.
