Blue jeans, white shirt / Walked into the room you know you made my eyes burn,” sang the uber-stylish Lana Del Ray. This anthem of modern day romance speaks volumes about the mystical power and style gravitas this clean and crisp look radiates. However, the trick is to amp up this classic staple combo with some clever layering and accessorising tricks.

Pair it right

A white shirt-blue denim combo, apart from being the safest and classic option for a casual day can also be blended with different unique styles to make a distinctive fashion statement. “Pairing a sharp structured white shirt over high-waist denims makes for a bold statement for a corporate woman. Layer it with subtle ornamentation and a pair of brown, tan leather shoes, a belt and carry a clutch or sling bag to exude femininity,” says designer Rocky S.

“Wear a pair of printed high-waist shorts with a white shirt or a thin transparent skirt over shorts. Combine the denims with polka dots or any other printed motif or wear a mini or maxi skirt in denim with a leather belt. Embellish your shirt with a blue bow to match your denim skirt or pants. Tie a small square scarf into a knot and wear it around your white shirt collar or casually throw a printed scarf around your neck,” says stylist Rajat Tangri.

Scope for experiment

“White shirts come in various new styles — fitted, cropped, peplum as well as classic styles — and one can team them in various ways. A fitted white shirt with rolled up sleeves can be worn with a vibrant pair of skinny pants or peddle pushers or a pencil skirt with a thin belt. A classic white shirt can be worn open with a tank top underneath teamed with denim jeans or shorts. A belted long white shirt can be worn like a dress teamed with shorts,” says designer Pria Kataaria Puri.

One can even experiment with the various styles of collar rather than keeping a standard classic collar. “A tailored white shirt makes a strong style statement to the urban working class female. Combining a pair of grunge blue denims on a loose white shirt and layering the look with a body hugging jacket (leather, linen, checked or striped) radiates a casual yet impactful street style. For men, a blue denim is best when paired with a linen blazer over a white shirt. This semi-professional look goes well for the workplace and the creasing lines on the linen blazer add character to your style,” says Rocky.

The art of accessorising
“Opt for thin neon vibrant belts or metallic belts. A waistcoat worn over a white shirt with a thin neck scarf looks fab. A pair of colour blocked or metallic sandals complement the white shirt look,” says Pria.

“Choose a choker or a long necklace in bold colours and a large size pendant too. Complete your look with a leather bag or a sequinned clutch,” says Rajat.
