Earlier this week, Colaba's cafe and bar cum office space, Social, opened its doors to quite a buzz. And that's been well followed by another opening, PDT (Please Don't Tell) at Kamala Mills, Lower Parel last evening. The quirky place can be a complicated place to break in for the first-timers, what with a secret booth and password and all. Yes. The new cafe and bar is inspired by the speakeasy concept regaining favour in Europe and the US these days.
To enter this supposedly-descreet looking, hidden place, you need to get to a red phonebooth and dial a password. But that's all for fun. Don't worry, you won't be left standing out if you don't know the three secret digits to dial. One, we tell you here (738 is the secret number), and two, as long as there's space in, no one will be turned away, password or no password. There are also plans to come up with a biometric system soon, for members of PDT.
The community bar has interiors meant to give you the underground vibe, and will be playing music too. The drinks and food, we are yet to try. So, watch this space for more.
What are Speakeasy Bars?
Speakeasy Bars are bars behind closed doors offering exclusive cocktails and food menu items in a restricted environment that is only accessible to a few. All the cities of the world have their secret place.
A concept that make into being in the early 1900s in the United States during the Prohibition era, the location of these places is spread by word of mouth or rumors to those places that are allowed to cater to existing leisure and night pleasures. Using the loyalty of its customers as the main tool, clients themselves were responsible to invite new friends to become part of the mystery. For this, they often used passwords or invitations that could only be distributed by customers since the bars relied on them.
Another striking aspect of these places is their secret entrances.
