Sleep in the right position to keep wrinkles away

It has been observed that sleeping positions are the main causes of static wrinkles.

If you are one of those who loves to dig your face into the cushioned comfort of the pillow, here’s a piece of news. Sleeping in such a fashion causes wrinkles on the face and sagging of facial skin.

“Pushing your face into a pillow can cause wrinkles from tension, friction and loss of moisture from your pillowcase absorbing your skin’s oils,” asserts cosmetologist, Dr Jaishree Manchanda. “A low thread count or an ill-fitting pillowcase can be even worse, since folds in the material could leave indentations on your face for hours when you wake up,” she explains. “The best position to prevent wrinkles is sleeping on your back.”

It has been observed that sleeping positions are the main causes of static wrinkles. People who sleep on their sides often see wrinkles appearing on their chins and cheeks, while those who sleep with their faces pressed into their pillows, tend to develop wrinkles on their foreheads.

Dr Madhuri Agarwal, consultant dermatologist, seconds this opinion. “Early to bed and early to rise is the best and most healthy practice. It takes care of the fact that the overall immunity levels are stable. So your hair and skin stay in good shape. Also, an undisturbed seven hours of sleep prevents early aging and pigmentation,” explains Madhuri. “Sleeping position can affect the skin. When you press your face against the pillow, the skin collagens get disturbed,” she adds.

So why should one avoid sleeping on the stomach? Not only does it damage your facial skin, but also disturbs digestion. Your fibres tend to twist and turn. Cosmetic physician Dr Rashmi Shetty asserts that the ideal sleeping position is with the spine rested on the mattress. “It’s the most relaxing position, with your hands by the side or on your stomach.  People come to me saying there are lot of laugh lines on one side of the face than the other. It’s simple… how you iron a shirt 10 times in the same way the crease gets permanent… it’s the same with the skin too,” says Rashmi.

“Also one might get more acne and pimples when you rub your skin on synthetic linens as it blocks your pores,” she adds. And that’s not all. Sleeping on the sides can also lead to more wrinkles on your cleavage area.
