After we’ve cursed our way through the dry October heat, the wintry winds that are starting to blow our way are a welcome relief. Until, of course, we find ourselves complaining of drying skin, chapped and bleeding lips and a whole lot more.

The cold dry weather causes an increase in transepidermal water loss (loss of moisture across the skin) in just about everyone. This results in dryness, flaking, itching and finally even winter dermatitis or eczema, if you don’t look after your skin well. Scaling or flaking of the palms and soles is another common complaint. The scalp can also get dry leading to flaking which is often misunderstood and mistreated as dandruff. Winter tends to aggravate skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis; hence, people prone to these should watch out for early signs of trouble brewing and consult their dermatologists. But lets stop frightening you with all that can go wrong, and tell you what you can do right.

THE ‘NO DRYING’ RULE
Most of us have normal or mixed skin types, while there are quite a few of us with dry, oily or sensative skin. No matter what your skin type, do not let it get too dry.

LIP LICK REFLEX
It’s easy to lick your lips when they feel dry. But you just might want to bite your tongue the next time you’re tempted to do that, as saliva contains digestive enzymes which do more harm than good. So do carry a lip balm or petroleum jelly to perk up those lips as frequently as required.

BATHING RITUALS

Avoid using very hot water for a bath, and do not bathe for longer than 10 minutes.

Make minimal use of soap. A soap that is too alkaline may harm dry or sensitive skin. Opt for a soap  with a pH closer to the normal pH of skin (5.5).

If you’re prone to dry skin, look out for special washes with bath oils/emollients or oatmeal. These are easily available.

MOISTURISE
Use a moisturising lotion/cream that suits your skin type, preferably on wet skin.

Moisturise dry skin 2-3 times a day, or as often as necessary.

Moisturise normal to oily skin once daily.

If you have oily skin, opt for oil free or non-comedogenic facial moisturisers to avoid acne or pimples.

Steer clear of overly perfumed moisturising creams and lotions.

WOOL WORRIES
Dry and sensitive skin is more prone to wool allergies, so wear a fine layer of cotton before you put on those woollens.

EAT HEALTHY
Fish oil capsules, carrots tomatoes and other orange and yellow coloured fruits and vegetables are essential. Green leafy veggies, nuts, raisins, dates, legumes and fortified cereals keep nutrition levels up. Milk and dairy products should be consumed in adequate quantities especially by vegetarians.
