From Burberry to ASOS, Gucci to Levi’s, Rag & Bone to Mango — the shirt and jacket mash-up has been seen across the board. Mumbai winters are anyway fleeting which makes the shacket a lightweight layering option if you want to ditch the thick tweeds and flannels.

Designer Sanjana Bubber, of label Bubber Couture, says, “A shacket is relatively easy to style. Simply throw it over a regular V or round neck tee or on your favourite shirt. The main key to styling a shacket is to mix and match colours and prints. A solid tee or shirt with a striped or plaid shacket is a great casual look or you can opt for a monotone look with a matching inner and outer look as long as the shacket is detailed and stylish. You can also go double-collared by trying one over a button-down. Opt for shackets in different fabrics, styles and design details for a more versatile wardrobe. There are some very cool options out there — zipper, button, yoke, quilted and pocketing details. Choose something that symbolises your personality, whether classic, funky, minimalistic or punk.”

Designer Aanchal Bubber adds, “One way to wear the shacket is half buttoned up or down with the top buttons open to reveal the under layer you are wearing. A neutral shacket with a contrast inner can give a smart look. A zip-up look also is great to experiment with. It’s a sharper look and perfect for casual Fridays in the office or a lunch meeting. It keeps the look urban, borderline edgy-yet-professional. Step out of your comfort zone, leave the formal blazer at home and opt for a more unique look. A button open denim shacket is a great effortlessly sophisticated look. A well-fitted and cut denim jacket paired with a white tee or your favourite white shirt with ripped jeans and casual suede loafers or drivers is the best Sunday brunch look. This can also be paired with a pattern, but be careful to match your prints to give a cohesive and smart look. This look takes you back to the 1800s when Levi Strauss invented the denim jacket alongside the denim jeans. Leather or suede jackets can also be styled similarly with boots to give a rock and roll vibe. The longline shacket, or a more casual trench is suitable for a sporty man, who isn’t into formal wear. It’s a more rebellious look and teams with sportswear. It works well with trainers or jeans and a casual pop art or cartoon funky T-shirt. This look works with smart sneakers or sleek converse shoes.”

Designer Urvashi Joneja says, “They’re this season’s most practical and fun import from street fashion. Especially in Mumbai, where winter jackets are almost never worn, shackets are the perfect layering separate. A printed, plaid, jacquard or colour blocked statement shacket can be layered with a white shirt for a very interesting look. It can be layered with a feminine dress to give it an edge and also serves a practical purpose weather wise. A regular suit jacket or blazer can easily be ditched for a shacket. They’re lighter, more fun and versatile.”
