Sandcastle, the debut film by poet, musician, writer and theatre actress Shomshuklla which released in India in March this year already has eight award nominations from the Madrid Tenerife and London international film festivals to its credit. The latest laurel for the self-taught filmmaker is that her film has been shortlisted as one of the Oscar entries from India for the 2015 Academy Awards selection. If selected, the film will represent India on the international platform. Talking about her work, Shomshuklla says, "Sandcastle is about a woman's journey and though it is shot in India, it depicts the journey of women all over the world. Women tend to play various roles that society expects them to – be it that of a daughter, a wife or a mother. The film addresses the question, 'Who am I?'" Despite having no prior experience in filmmaking, Shomshuklla trained herself in the art by watching many movies and talking to cinematographers and technicians. The film that was screened at the La Femme International Film Festival, also won an award for Best Cinematography at the Tenerife International Film Festival for Ritam Banerjee. "I think the appeal of the film is the aesthetics and the culture shown. It was an eye opener for many to modern India. My second film too has been well received and I plan to continue as an independent filmmaker long term."says Shomshuklla.
