The Celtic Connections music festival that’s held in Glasgow, Scotland every year and draws an audience of over 100,000 people, will this time partner with India. The festival that will take place from January 16 to February 2, has had acts like Snow Patrol, Bob Geldof and The Mavericks perform in the past and now some Indian acts will take stage. Those chosen include folk-rock band The Raghu Dixit Project, folk band Papon and The East India Company, Ruhaniyat who work with bauls, fakirs, and folk musicians across Bengal, sarangi player and collaborator Suhail Yusuf Khan and folk singer Saurav Moni.

Also, as a result of the festival’s partnership with the Rajasthan International Folk Festival, one will see vocalist Parveen Sabrina Khan who is best known for her maands, a dying form of Rajasthani folk singing take stage as well as Maru Tarang — a collaboration between Asin Langa on Sindhi sarangi, accompanied by Bobby Singh on tabla and Bhungar Manganiyar on khartal  with Australian guitarist/singer-songwriter Jeff Lang, folk/jazz singer.

Scotland’s External Affairs Minister Humza Yousaf made this announcement in Mumbai recently. The festival also marks the beginning of the cultural calendar for the Commonwealth Games, slated to take place July 2014 in Scotland.  This is part of Folk Nations, a three-year programme by British Council to support folk music from India and the UK through various collaborations.

Donald Shaw, artistic director Celtic Connections who visited Mumbai in March to listen to bands from across the country said, “The Celtic Connections festival has always been well known for celebrating the connections between Celtic traditions and cultures across the globe and we’re really looking forward to exploring further musical links with these Indian acts at next year’s festival. I was blown away by the talent of these performers when I had the opportunity to see them in India earlier this year and I can’t wait for Glasgow audiences to experience this too.”
