Say hello to the split-leg trousers: Flared pants finished with zipper details dominate Fall Winter 19

Split-leg trousers are having a moment in the sun. Berluti’s opening look by Kris Van Assche was a patina leather suit with trousers spliced with zipper accents on them. Hem slits were also seen at Fendi, Daniel Fletcher, Stella McCartney, Sacai and John Lawrence Sullivan. Flared trousers came in flannel at Daniel Fletcher and Pronounce showcased a version in neon-piped mohair. In India, designers like Khanijo and Sayantan Sarkar have toyed with this trend staying true to their metier. While Gaurav Khanijo’s campaign features Jim Sarbh in a slashed pair of bottoms, Sayantan showcased jumpsuits and pants with fissures at the hem in his last outing. “Be it the side seams or the front seams, this touch changes the fall of the trousers and hence the overall fit. These rips look nice when worn with a pair of statement boots or shoes. However, if the shoes don’t complement the pants, it’ll kill the entire look. Sacai’s cowboy boots, which are high-ankle, would complement any kind of pants,” says Gaurav.

An offshoot of the exaggerated silhouette

Designers attribute it to the grunge undercurrent in fashion, which has permeated tailored pieces, too. Sayantan says, “It’s an offshoot of the exaggeration of sleeves of the suit and a take off from the trackpants dominating fashion landscape. We did low-crotch jumpsuits with inner seam split last season. Overall, it’s a careless grunge look.”

Not everyone’s cup of tea

One needs a certain personality type to pull off this bold trend. Menswear designer Karrtik D says, “Be it in any silhouette, the side-slit pants look sexy and have been a hit on the international ramp. This trend can be tricky for men to pull off but with the correct type of styling, it can work.”
