A trip to the Maldives or Bali is an exotic getaway for some couples. However, it’s also turning out to be a last ditch attempt to save marriages in the US with an increasing number of couples opting for save-cations to work on their marital problems.
While some couples are going for relaxed beach getaways, others are signing on for action-packed adventure trips hoping to reconnect with their partners again. However, can save-cations be a quick-fix solution to marital problems?
Clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany, says, “I believe a save-cation can save a marriage. Many couples have major compatibility issues, that requires a lot of effort by both partners to resolve their fundamental differences. A save-cation is just a tiny resource, which couples can take advantage of. It cannot and should not be perceived as a magic pill to save a marriage.”
Psychiatrist Anjali Chhabria, adds, “A married couple on the brink of separation/divorce is likely to have gone through several failed attempts to save their marriage. They may still be hopeful and decide to give their marriage a last chance by trying a ‘save-cation’. Whether it works or not would vary from couple to couple.
In some cases, it may give that much needed boost to a marriage, however, persistent efforts from the husband and the wife is essential to continue to strengthen their relationship.
‘Save-cation’ gives them time away from their distressing routine lives and a chance to focus on their past happy memories, remember each other’s positive qualities — what attracted them to each other and the love/understanding that they shared. This can motivate them to work on their marriage further rather than calling it quits.”
