In February this year, Malayalam actress Priya Prakash Varrier slayed it with a wink in a viral video clip from her film, Oru Adaar Love. Cut to the end of 2018, Sara Ali Khan made hearts flutter with the peppy number Aankh Marey from Simmba. But did you know her wink is actually just a hoodwink? As the track continued to soar the charts, director Rohit Shetty revealed that they had to take multiple shots waiting for the actress to get the one-eyed blink right! According to a source, Rohit had said, “Although the song is Aankh Marey, the irony is that Sara doesn’t know how to wink. Because of this, we had to keep changing and playing around with camera angles to hide her inability to wink. The good thing is that it’s not visible in the song and people are loving the chemistry between Ranveer and Sara.”

THEY CAN’T DO IT EITHER

For a number of international celebs, too, winking is a no-go. Turns out, Sara has company in Rihanna, whose in-adeptness at the gesture has extensively been documented by a Twitter user. Award ceremonies, talk shows, on the stage or at shoots —  RiRi’s wink fails is a thread on the social media. Ygritte in Game Of Thrones may as well have said, ‘You know nothing’ in real life to actor Kit Harrington (who essayed Jon Snow) as he is another person, who’s bad at the eye gesticulation. Apart from them, Baby One More Time hitmaker Britney Spears, model and Victoria’s Secret angel Miranda Kerr, Titanic actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and Idris Elba or Shere Khan of The Jungle Book (2016) are some other famous people whose excuse of winks have turned into memes and GIFs.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

While it’s not a malady, one wonders why some people can’t get it right. Experts say that this is a voluntary action that one needs to practise and learn individual muscle control for. The muscle that closes the eye can be activated individually and that is called winking. However, there is no disease wherein a person cannot control or close one eye, opines Dr Cyres K Mehta, surgical chief, Dr Cyres Mehta’s International Eye Centre. He adds that there is a condition where the eye will close automatically while speaking or moving the jaw, called jaw winking. But that’s a different thing altogether. Well, as they say, practice makes perfect!
