Monday was a big day in the Mauritian calendar, as crowds gathered to mark the 50th anniversary of Independence and the 26th anniversary of the Republic of Mauritius at Champ de Mars in Port Louis. The pre-Independence Day celebrations kicked off a day before with a Regatta that saw local fishermen compete with each other as the crowds mingled and enjoyed some local delicacies and performances.

The Independence Day celebrations took place post 5 pm, Mauritian time. The Chief Guest of the event was the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind who was accompanied by his wife Savita Kovind. The event saw active participation from the Indian side which featured a fly past by the Indian Naval Helicopters, a drill by the Air Warrior Team of the Indian Air Force, March past by the Indian Naval Band and the Indian Naval Platoon. Other highlights included a fancy drill by the Mauritius Police Force, a fly past by Mauritius Police Helicopters, Dornier Aircraft, among other things. The celebrations were wrapped up with a cultural show followed by fireworks.
