Renewing vows after 70 years of togetherness

When high school sweethearts Ferris and Margaret Romaire tied the knot in 1946, no one they knew owned a camera. So, unfortunately for them, their wedding remained only a memory. Now, 70 years later, the couple has re-enacted their ceremony once more to capture the magical moment.

For the Romaires’ 70th wedding anniversary, their granddaughter, Amanda Kleckly, planned a photoshoot so they could commemorate the event. She contacted photographer Lara Carter, who was happy to help with the unconventional shoot. So, on October 12 in Pearland, Texas, the Romaires tied the knot once more. Ferris, 90, looking sharp in his tuxedo, and 89-year-old Margaret with her lavender gown and veil, grinned widely as the photographer captured the moment for them. “You can see the love between them in the way they interacted with each other and laughed together as we would go from the different poses,” Lara told the Huffington Post. “They are a beautiful example of what marriage is meant to be.”

The couple even shared a few words of wisdom about how they’ve managed to make their decades-long marriage work. The key is to “giving each other space and respecting one another,” Ferris said, and also “admitting when you are wrong, except that Margaret is never wrong!”

“If you ask Margaret she would say, ‘saying you’re sorry, except that Ferris has a hard time doing that!’” Lara added. 

The Romaires’ say their wedding years ago was a simple affair, with a 15-minute ceremony and the reception held later at the bride’s parents’ home. They went on to have four children, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. For the aged couple, that ‘simple life’ has been a theme throughout the years since.
