Haochi, Sun N Sand’s latest offering specialises in contemporary Chinese cuisine. An open kitchen invites diners in, taking you on a culinary quest, with a menu that covers different regions including Xiang (Hunan), Chuan (Sichuan) and Guangdong (Cantonese).
Food Haochi has a varied selection of steamed and fried dishes that will appeal to different palates. The Steamed Spinach and Scallop Dumpling (Rs 650) is a healthy option that tastes good because the combination works well. The Phoenix Shrimp (Rs 385), makes for a vibrant visual because of its yellow hue. Fried shrimp is doused with crispy, yellow strings and is a tasty, crispy starter. The Baby Pork Ribs (Rs 1,200) is a good bet for those looking for something different.
Marinated pork chops are stir fried with garlic, chilli, peppers and chilli, a must-try. We also tried the Haochi Tofu (Rs 550) sliced tofu with bamboo shoots, spring onion and bell peppers which is served in the chef’s signature sauce. The tofu is silky smooth and complements the sauce. The Haochi Lotus Root crispy lotus root (Rs 400) is fairly good, but is not something that will appeal to everyone, because of its peculiar aftertaste. The Garden Beans (Rs 500) is a light starter that works well for those on a diet. The Fresh Asparagus (Rs 550) stir-fried asparagus with a choice of ginger spring onion or garlic spring onion sauce is another option for those looking for something healthy. For the main course, we tried and recommend the Five Treasure Vegetables (Rs 500) made with baby corn, water chestnut, Chinese mushroom, squash and bamboo shoot, tossed in a special sauce that’s light and good. The Garlic Butter Rice (Rs 400) fried rice with garlic butter and scallions would go well with a spicy gravy. While The Chicken Udon noodles tossed in black bean sauce with vegetables (Rs 500) is just perfect. For dessert, we recommend the Almond Yoghurt with Exotic Fruits (Rs 350) that’s not too sweet and just right and goes with the selection of fruits on offer.
