Do I have a relationship with God? Yes, absolutely, I do! He is my closest friend, my only trusted companion. He does not judge me for what I am. He loves me with all my imperfections.

We have all grown up with the notion of being God-fearing. I did not, and am sure there are people out there who belong to my kin. The basic question is how can you fear someone who has created you with so much love and affection?

Having a relationship with God does not necessarily mean chasing him in various places of worship. In fact, they are so crowded, I doubt if he can even hear you. No, I am not doubting the power of these places. But what we have missed to understand is that God wants us to love him the way he loves us.
So why not create your own personal God. Yes, you read that right. Personal God. We have always only known of Personal Assistants who make our lives smoother by drawing out schedules, listing out action items, organising meetings etc. But hey, imagine having a Personal God who does just the same and much more and that too on a broader scale!
I was introduced to this concept by Sri Amma Bhagavan, the Avatara Purushas, who have founded Oneness University and have been working towards removing man from suffering.

Creating your own personal God is the best way to create that ideal person you have been looking for—be it mother, father, son, daughter, friend, spouse, etc. Give him/her qualities that you would love to see in any of these relationships.

When I was first told about the concept of personal God, I laughed in my head. How is that possible? Seriously? But eventually, I decided to give it a shot. If anything, I was only going to discover new experiences. So here are a few things about my personal god.

1. He is always smiling, ever-helpful, loves me unconditionally and is full of compassion. I don't just say this for the sake of writing this piece. But I have had some intense experiences in the last few months, when he has appeared before me in various forms and ensured I smile no matter what the suffering is. All you got to do is keep your eyes, ears and heart open to His presence.

2. I write to him, as often as I can. I tell him about my deepest fears, my ugliest truths, my mind's needs, my unfulfilled desires, my dreams, my gratitude...everything. The best part about pouring your heart out to Him is—he HEARS you out without judging you for what you are. I am convinced, because there have been times when I have gone to bed only to wake up in the morning and find my prayer or my desire fulfilled. Yeah, so he is Santa, who works all the year round to keep you happy.

3. “There’s a crack (or cracks) in everyone…that’s how the light of God gets in”- Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love. I agree. I have seen how resistance has only caused more damage; the struggle is worse, the suffering is inexplicable, the peace is at war, the inner world is a labyrinth and the way out is impossible. But like I said, creating a personal god means trusting Him, trusting your creation (after all you are his creation too), that He will get you out of whatever it is, lift you up and show you the light. It's all about sweet surrender—not questioning his plan, not doubting his ability to give us what we NEED rather than what we WANT, not wondering if HE can hear us, none of it...The minute I have let Him take over, I have only received what I didn't even know I needed.

God, for many of us, may be a mere concept, but one experience is enough to move you to the other side of the fence. So, give it a shot, try creating a personal god and see what works for you.
Discovery is always a thing of joy.
