In a short span of time, Lily-Rose Depp has become the metaphor for the au courant French girl cool. When you are the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, style is something which comes to you naturally. In early 2015, she owned the red carpet with her mommy and long-time Chanel muse Paradis at the fashion house’s Métiers d’Art Collection show in New York. A veritable style muse for the 21st century, her style picks have driven her fans into a frenzy and everytime she steps out, her style becomes the talking point. While one wants everything from her enviable closet, there are key style lessons, which one can assimilate to nail her quintessentially sassy-meets-effortless appeal.

She keeps it real

Malini Banerji, Fashion Director, Elle India says, “She looks her age, dresses her age. She’s minimal with her make-up, which is very French and she keeps it as real as possible. Besides, she has got a great bone structure and doesn’t need to scream at all the time. Look at her pap pics — whether she’s running errands or she’s at the Chanel fittings, she looks any other girl. She’s usually seen in a pair of denims and it’s never about — ‘I have got everything going look, where I have gone and shopped’.”

Edgy and rocker chic

Designer Manish Arora shares that Lily reminds him a lot of Kate Moss with her effortless and nonchalant attitude. “Her red carpet style is dominated by form-fitting Chanel tweed suits and dresses while her street style are full of bodysuits and singlets in monotones and denims and are so casual and easy to emulate,” says Arora. He adds, “One big part of Lily’s street style are bodysuits and T-shirts in monotones with skinny jeans or shorts with a bomber thrown on. Wear these with combat boots and a backpack or tote. Borrow from her love for tweed and channel 60s vibe by wearing sweatshirts with pearls in the classic colours of black and white thrown on a pair of skinny trousers with stilettos.”

‘Fresh and unpredictable’

Designer Shubhika Davda of label Papa Don’t Preach defines her style in three words, “young, fresh and unpredictable.” “She really makes it look effortless and nails the ‘I woke up like this’ look even on the red carpet. She’s definitely unafraid to rock a printed hoodie with shorts to the red carpet and wears her youth proudly with her fun take on ‘highschool couture”. Swimsuits with jeans, pastel peasant dresses with stark black patent leather pumps, she follows no clear rules,” says Shubhika. She adds, “Indian girls can try being a little more experimental and fun. Not get restricted to what colours work for day and what works at night or worse what complements their “complexion”. Like Lily they can team embellished tees with OTT printed/embellished lehengas/ skirts, boxy shouldered crop tops with sheer/semi sheer skirts or throw a surprise tie on a casual shirt and jeans look. Depp is big on wearing scarves and chokers, with off-shoulder, mid-riff bearing crop tops, so that’s definitely a statement, be it teamed with a lehenga or even denims.”

A born diva

Designer Rina Singh of label EKA underscores a lovely, believable vibe while analysing Depp’s style. “She’s not an average girl-next-door nor someone who is born a diva. Yet she can carry both with equal ease. Even in her most flamboyant red carpet appearances, you see a part of her come through, maybe her hair is not exactly made up to match, or her lip colour or her jewellery. She would leave a bit of herself easy, and non- pretentious. Thus making each of her appearance distinctively herself. Her casual style is that of a young girl with an effortless, easy vibe. Mixing red carpet heels with denim jackets, or red pumps with a negligee dress putting her colours, her layers and her accessories together in a rather self styled way makes her fashion more of an individualistic genre. Something that’s an aspect of her personality rather then following trends and ticking the boxes. And not doing everything by the book.”
