The first mention of designer Ramona Narang and you’ll instantly remember the elite parties she is spotted at. But when it comes to work, she is as serious about it as any entrepreneur would like to be.

Part of an ongoing fashion tour, Ramona is quick to dismiss the notion that she has had it easy in the industry, because of her society connections. “There are people who think that just because I come from a well to do family, I don’t have to bother. But let me tell you — I had to face double the amount of pressure when I ventured out, only because of the already high expectations,” she says in a matter-of-fact tone.

Having friends in the relevant circle helps, she admits, but only to a certain extent. “At the end of the day, nobody is going to buy your designs just because you are their friend. They will go for it only if they think it looks good on them,” reasons Ramona.

The designer is showing her cocktail line at the ongoing fashion tour and she describes it as “a line for women who are confident, wholesome and understand the need to look elegant and feel sexy at the same time.” But, more importantly, Ramona insists that her designs are for women with curves…” who are confident of themselves and like themselves just the way they are.

Talking about cocktail trends, Ramona says that not following a trend is the best way to go. “Wearing something that will make you feel pretty and confident is the best trend in itself,” says Ramona, adding that contrary to popular perception a cocktail outfit does not mean that it should show too much skin. “It’s more about how you feel than about how much is on display,” she laughs.

A few months back actors Bipasha Basu and Ameesha Patel ended up wearing similar outfits, designed by Ramona for an awards function in Toronto.

Ask her if she discussed this with the actors in question and Ramona says, “Both of them were gracious enough to let the matter die a natural death. But it’s definitely not fair to blame the designer for such a faux pas. Ameesha had bought the dress directly from me, whereas Bipasha’s stylist had picked it up for her to wear in a movie. But I believe both of them looked stunning and that is what matters.”
