The recently held Golden Globes was one of the most watched award shows. And all the stars prepped themselves well for the big night. Make-up artist Rachel Goodwin took to Instagram to reveal a cute selfie of Emma Stone wearing a Korean lip mask. The actress used a mask containing ingredients like rose flower oil, cherry extract, collagen, and vitamin E that helps plump and hydrate lips. The mask that needs to be left on for 15 to 20 minutes acts as a primer, prepping the pout before make-up application. Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga are also said to be fans. While face masks have been in the market for a while, do lips need special treatment?

DRY LIPS LOOK UGLY

Dr Reema Arora, Medical Head, Facial Aesthetic, Cocoona Centre for Aesthetic Transformation, New Delhi says lip masks are extremely helpful in lip exfoliation followed by hydration. “They often contain fruit extract enzymes as well as moisturising agents like shea butter with other organic materials. Dry and chapped lips look ugly and do not allow the make-up to stay. It also gives a flaky look. So a mask can actually help prime and protect the lips before make-up. Some of the masks may also have plumping agents like adipofill and hyaluronic acid. If you are not looking for volume, please ensure you check the ingredients. Also, look for any allergies from the same,” she adds.

LOOK FOR INGREDIENTS

Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Founder and Medical head, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, feels a lip mask is great as it helps to moisturise, nourish and plump up the lips in a short duration. “It not only provides deep conditioning but also helps to achieve a full pout and also treats peeling and flaking lips. Common ingredients include organic agave nectar, hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, brown sugar, orange oil, vanilla extract, organic manuka honey, lanolin, papaya enzymes and marine collagen peptides. Just ensure you don’t overuse it for getting rid of dead skin.”

Dr Milan D Choksey, Medical Manager, Active Cosmetics Division, L’Oreal India Private Ltd says different ingredients serve a different purpose. “Glycerine acts as a humectant which attracts moisture. Hyaluronic acid acts as a skin plumping agent. The utility of collagen in lip masks is unclear because the molecules of collagen are large and do not penetrate the skin. Certain brands carry enzymes that fight the effects of dry, aging lips by plumping them up and reducing the fine lines. The inclusion of natural oils and anti-oxidants protect the thin skin and lips and also hydrates them.”

DIY OPTIONS

Dr Abhishek Pilani, Cosmetologist and Trichologist, Assure clinic, Andheri, says ideally a lip mask is one which makes your lips look more healthy. “You can make your own one at home. Simply take one teaspoon avocado oil, olive oil, or sweet almond oil. Mix one tablespoon sugar, one tablespoon honey and one teaspoon coconut oil, shea butter, or Vaseline. Put all these ingredients together and use for soft, hydrated lips.”
