Painter Uma Bardhan in quest of 'Soul of my country'

Eminent painter Uma Bardhan has themed her present exhibition 'Soul of my Country [2nd Edition]' on the 'Real Bharat which one can only discover in villages.'

"In the exhibition series 'The Soul of my country,' which had travelled to Kolkata from other cities recently, the 73-year-old painter had said, India lives in its villages where you can experience and share life in its fullest form.

"The paintings express the soul through life, India and her core values and culture portrayed across the canvas, with colours. The vibrant colours merge with each other reflecting the spirit of Bharat," she said.

The paintings for 'Soul of my Country' exhibition are of three types - decorative, figurative and narrative.

In decorative paintings one can see birds, animals and human-beings, the figurative comprises God and Goddesses and a complete series on tandava dance forms of Lord Shiva. There is also narrative kind of paintings depicting the life of hand cart pullers and turban-wearing Rajputs of Rajasthan.

Bardhan, having drawn landscapes in water colour on silk, oil on canvas and water mixable oil on canvas, said the spirit of the show Soul of my Country is an endeavour to find out the secret significance of form and appearance, by discovering one's deeper self.

The veteran painter, who had previously held numerous exhibitions at the national level including on a social cause 'On Color discrimination" with Gallery Sree Arts at Alliance Francaisein August 2014, pioneered the rare medium 'Water Colour on Silk'.
