We've just bid goodbye to the monsoon and with Diwali holidays just around the corner, many of us will be booking or would have already booked tickets to our favourite destination, Goa. A quick search on Google for the best time to visit throws up this answer on the Goa tourism website, “The peak tourist season to visit Goa is between October and January. However, Goa is at its most beautiful during the monsoons from June to September, when the hotels offer the best discounts.” Well, looks like some of us took that seriously this year! Goa witnessed a record high of tourist arrivals during the months of June, July and August 2014. The State recorded an 18% increase in tourists for the 3 months against tourist arrivals during the same period in 2013.

Apart from the greenery, there's white water rafting which can be experienced in Goa only during the monsoons. Another huge success was Goa InstaWalk, where bloggers from all over the country were given an opportunity to showcase their passion for photography whilst experiencing the cultural and natural aspects of the place. Both were conducted in the months of June and August 2014 at Tambdi Surla and Arvalem waterfalls.

Goa celebrates several during June-September, which attract several tourists. São João celebrated at the onset of the monsoons by Catholics, involves wearing kopels and jumping in a well. Celebrated on the fourth Saturday of August at Divar, Bonderam, the flag festival creates a carnival ambience.

The rise in tourists is attributed to the introduction of safety and security measures and awareness created on the hinterland, culture, monsoon and pilgrim tourism. Some such initiatives include domestic and international road shows and exhibitions

So the next time you're rethinking your decision to travel to Goa during the 'off-season', think again.
