When it comes to giving birth, most celebrities opt for a five-star hospital experience. VIP delivery suites include deluxe private rooms with a great view, personal care 24/7, post labour manicures and pedicures and gourmet food available round the clock. However, there are others, who prefer to have their delivery in their own abode. James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly recently added to their brood with their fifth child, daughter Gwendolyn. The baby was delivered at their home with a doctor and midwife on-hand, just like their three older kids. After Hrs looks at some other couples who went the same route...

STACY KEIBLER AND JARED POBRE

The actress and former wrestler along with her husband, Jared Pobre, welcomed their second child in June. She announced his birth on Instagram with a picture of her son’s hand, “Born at home, on 6.18.18 our sweet little man Bodhi Brooks Pobre entered our world.” In 2015, she also welcomed daughter Ava Grace in a similar way. She said at the time in an interview, “This is the way that birthing was intended to be. If you think about the medieval times and all that, like this is how it was supposed to be... I think that if you do want to have a natural home birth it will help. It’s such a beautiful miraculous experience and I think that there’s a little bit of that that may be lost when you’re in the hospital, with — whether it’s you have to be on drugs, or whether you’re inducing — you’re just taking away from what it’s meant to be.”

ALANIS MORISSETTE AND SOULEYE

Alanis Morissette chose to give birth to both her children with husband Souleye at home. She had a midwife and a doula on hand for the labour. While son Ever was born in 2011, daughter Onyx was born in 2017 the same way. She later admitted, “It was terrifying, but then once we heard her, and once she cried (and) I pulled her up and she started breastfeeding, I was just like, ‘Ah,’It gets gnarlier and gnarlier. I think the words Texas Chainsaw Massacre were used when (my midwife and doula) walked in. It’s pretty gnarly, but it’s not meant to be all clean and perfect. We are animals.”

ALYSON HANNIGAN AND ALEXIS DENISOF

The How I Met Your Mother star was motivated to have home births after watching a documentary The Business of Being Born. When her daughters Satyana Marie and Keeva Jane, who she has with husband Alexis Denisof were expected she thought her home would be the most comfortable space. She admitted later, “It’s definitely not the right choice for everyone. I don’t like hospitals and the idea of being in labour somewhere I don’t like at all wasn’t how I wanted to bring my kids into the world. We had a midwife but we asked our doctor if he needed to be there...”

GISELE BÜNDCHEN AND TOM BRADY

In 2009, Gisele Bündchen gave birth to her first child Benjamin with husband Tom Brady while lying in a bathtub. A water birth is said to be a gentler way to bring a baby into the world. She chose the same method for the birth of daughter Vivian a few years later. She said, “I am blessed to have been able to have a home birth surrounded by love, where I was able to feel safe. It was a powerful experience. I never felt so vulnerable but so strong at the same time.”

JENNIFER CONNELLY AND PAUL BETTANY

The couple who already had two sons, became parents to a daughter Agnes back in 2011 with a scheduled home water birth. Jennifer chose her New York City apartment over a hospital due to the comfort factor. She said at an event, “Like many women, I gave birth to her at home. But unlike many women around the world, my birth was attended by a skilled midwife.”
