With the New Year here already, there’s no better time to update your look. In case you’re confused about how to style your hair or what colours will be popular when it comes to make-up, we have put a guide together for you. Professionals in various fields tell us how to rock this year.

The mane effect

Celebrity hairstylist Aasif Ahmed says it’s the best time of the season to get fringes, bangs or any kind of hair that is easy to let down. “More flow and bounce will always be in. To keep your hair voluminous without damaging it much, you can cheat volume by switching partings to the opposite side you normally do it. Braids are definitely fashionable. Whether, it’s the twisted braid or a fishtail braid, you can carry it off for a casual brunch or even a red carpet. Also, low ponytails ensure elegance and youthfulness. I think lesser the product, better the hair. With the weather being good, natural let down hair will be more in trend than artificial hair,” he adds. Adhuna Bhabani, Founder and Creative Director, BBLUNT, says hair colour contouring will be popular.  “Contouring as a technique has made its way to hair too and is used to accentuate, soften facial features. Just like the face contouring technique, hair colour contouring uses darker tones to add depth to areas that you want to appear softer or more drawn in and lighter shades to highlight other areas or make them appear brighter. Colour melting is a technique that blends the highlights with the base colour of the hair so you don’t see very strong lines. What distinguishes this technique from regular highlights is that we use multiple shades to create the melted effect.

Rainbow colour scheme has taken over the internet, even when it comes to your hair. The technical name for this unicorn hair trend is ‘the Underlight’. It involves hiding bright colours under a top layer of hair (slightly more edgy over the rainbow hair) so women can choose when and how to show it off. Blue black hair is popular. This is simply black hair colour with a tint of blue keeping it classic yet trendy at the same time.”

Skin basics

Dr Soma Sarkar, Medical Director and Dermatologist, Skin Inn says oxygen infused make-up is going to be big in 2017 as it will keep you looking fresh and radiant throughout. “SPF in body and hand care creams are going to be ruling the shelves as every part exposed requires UV protection. Paraben-free products for hair and skin will also be seen. Anti-pollution creams will be available in the market with protection towards harmful effects of pollution. Masks will be popular like carbonated masks used to clean and tighten the pores, sheet masks for lightening, brightening and hydration. The focus will be on all the three as we have to cater to different age groups so all these treatments will be in demand.

In machines, the laser hair technology will become supersonic with three wavelengths together so it can easily target all the skin types. The laser with picosecond technology is ideal for pigmentation correction. The new ingredients in skin care products would be more natural like pomegranate seeds for microdermabrasion, carbon particles for oil-control and pumpkin peels for skin glow and rejuvenation.”

Make me up

Natasha Nischol, co-owner and co-founder of Fat Mu says, forget the classic smoky — next season is all about the smudgy eye. “The messy shadow was inspired by cigarette ash, and the kohl was applied to give a ‘late night, early morning’ feel. In other words, don’t worry about drawing a neat line. Lips, will come into focus, and poppy bright fresh colours will be super in. Spring colours such as fresh reds, poppy oranges, trendy browns are apt for your statement lips. At Mary Katrantzou’s show, lips were painted acid-bright orange, pink and red, lips at Acne Studios were an unusual mushroom purple and eyelids at Nina Ricci came in glossy violet, aquamarine and tangerine hues. Colour was very much present on the catwalks if you looked for it, so you never know what might just hit off. The no make-up look isn’t exactly new backstage, but there’s no denying it’s having a moment all over again. Our favourite trick for a pretty flush next season? Lipstick in place of blush. A rosy glow was present in all four fashion cities, with Nars’s new Kiss Me Stupid lipstick shade applied to the cheeks,” she adds.
