A sure-fire way to quickly elevate any look, a red lipstick is a must-have in every woman’s vanity kit. Yet most tend to shy away from this colour as they find it too bold and suggestive. Others find the shade too tricky to match with their skin tone and way too bright for a day at work. Today, there are several formulations — lipstick, liquid lip colour, gloss and so on —that one’s spoilt for choice. As National Lipstick Day was celebrated globally on July 29, there’s no better time to master this pout. Here’s how...

WORK READY

When worn correctly, red lipstick can be an extremely feminine as well as empowering colour for women to wear. It is a dream to pull off the right shade of red, says Stafford Braganza, National Education Manager for L’Oréal Paris, Maybelline, NYX Professional Make-up. “There are certain strict rules when it comes to work related etiquettes when wearing a red lipstick. The first step in finding that perfect red colour is to figure out your skin tone. For this you need to analyse your  undertones. There are two main ones — warm undertones and cool undertones. If the veins on your wrist appear blue under light, then you have cool      undertones. On the other hand, if the veins on your wrist appear green under the light, then you have warm undertones. Lipstick shades such as bright brick red, pink red, and orange red will suit you better if you have cool undertones in your skin. The dark shades of lipstick red such as ruby, purple, and maroon will suit you better if you have warm undertones in your skin,” he adds.

RIGHT FORMULA

The debate between matte or glossy lip colours is still ripe. Both have their pros and cons. To decide which finish would work better for you, you’d have to consider the texture of your lips along with the  occasion, explains  Priya Kapur, make-up and hair expert. “A lip gloss is better if you have dry lips, a matte lip colour would further dry out your lips and make it look flaky. Matte shades are good for well hydrated lips. The rest of your face should be subtle and simple, with the red lip being the focal point. The face can have a healthy glow with minimal make-up; concealer, highlighter and a hint of blush with some mascara,” says Priya.

A TRICKY LIP COLOUR

Red is the most difficult colour to apply because it is very prominent. If you want something longlasting, choose matte over glossy because it doesn’t require many touch-ups throughout the day, suggests Vardan Nayak, celebrity make-up artist. “A glossy red bleeds out, so you will have to       remove and reapply it,” says he. For a red pout that stays put, you should start of with some exfoliation. Use a gentle lip scrub, says Jyoti       Advani, make-up artist. “Use a good lip balm to moisturise the lip. Leave it on for a few minutes. Thereafter, line the lip with an    intensely pigmented long wear lip pencil and fill adequately. For added dimension you could pat on a pigmented eye shadow before applying the lip colour. You could dab on a highlighter on the cupid’s bow for a hint of shine for added drama,” adds Jyoti.
