Singer-composer Somesh Mathur, who has given some hit songs in the ’90s including a track with Asha Bhosle and has been regarded as Pandit, is currently working on an ambitious project where he will give music to a three-part prequel to the Mahabharata text, written by US-based well-known healer and writer KB Mann.

While Mann is almost done with rewriting the original Mahabharata script, his lead-in text appealed to Somesh who decided to work on the album immediately. “It was destiny that I met KB Mann. He is an astrologer, a spiritual man and a holistic healer. He has been writing the Mahabharata in its original form, like it existed in the original manuscript and now as the convoluted and misinterpreted version that has reached us. While Hollywood studios are interested in making a film out of it, I found the three-part prequel really beautiful,” says Somesh.

While Somesh has worked on several genres of music including jazz, blues, sufi and ghazals, this is one is his first attempt at composing music for mythological text which has been written in English. “It has been a challenging experience to blend the instruments like veena and percussions that existed in Hastinapur at that time with our contemporary instruments to make it more global,” he says, adding, “I will also be using a huge orchestra and choir pieces to give it the grandeur that such work deserves.”

Interestingly, the whole composition involves 30-minute-long continuous singing by Somesh. “It is challenging because I plan to perform live once I am completely ready with it. So there is no scope for errors here,” he says.

Somesh will also be involved in the creative aspects of the seven films that are being planned on the Mahabharata. “What interested me most about these writings was the fact that it will break a lot of myths and will bring a lot of convoluted facts to light. So I decided that I would go beyond the album and also work on aspects of the film when it is picked up by a big Hollywood studio,” says Somesh.
