Just before their visit to India, Prince Charles and Camilla personally hosted a reception for members of the Indian and Sri Lankan community at the St James’ Palace, where they grooved to Kishore Kumar numbers belted out by British Indian singer Navin Kundra. This Saturday, the royal couple arrive in Mumbai for a dinner engagement and one of the main courses will be a special musical performance by Bollywood songstress Sunidhi Chauhan, who has collaborated with Alka Yagnik, Shaan and Udit Narayan.

“It is an honour to be able to host their Royal Highnesses at home in India,” said Mukesh Ambani, who is the principal force behind the celebrations arranged in Mumbai. It’s probably also his way of thanking them for the red carpet treatment he and his wife Nita received when they were guests of Prince Charles and Camilla at the Windsor Castle earlier this year. Some Bollywood A-listers, among several notables who will be making their presence felt at this gala dinner, are Naina Lal-Kidwai, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Cyrus Mistry, Anand Mahindra, Neeraj Kanwar, S Ramadorai, Harish Salve, Rana Kapoor and Ranjit Barthakur.

Of course, there’s the serious business of supporting charities working for the underprivileged, his Indian hosts also intend it to be something of an early birthday celebration for the Prince, who turns 65 on November 14. Unfortunately, it’ll be a working day for him since he’ll be taking a flight to Colombo in the afternoon. The British High Commission in the Sri Lankan capital plans to do its bit with a reception that will have “some singing and maybe even a cake”. Hmm.
