Bhuvan Bam’s musical and comic sides are as different as, ‘Jo farz se bhara tha bastaa woh bhi khaali ho gaya’ and ‘Jiska kaam usi ko saajhe, dholi taaro dhol baaje’. Point this out to the 24-year-old Delhiite, who’s in Mumbai to release his third single, Safar, and the YouTube sensation states, “Music is my first love but comedy just happened and people started calling me a comedian. But, I’m not one. However, music and comedy both come to me spontaneously.” The BB Ki Vines star tells us that he hasn’t slept in four weeks, but is still in his element during our chat.

ABOUT SAFAR

After a peppy Teri Meri Kahani and romantic Sang Hoon Tere, earlier this week, Bhuvan released Safar — a groovy-yet-soulful track on travel and the journey of life. Bhuvan says, “I wrote the song while I was travelling. I’m happy with the way it has turned out,” he beams. The 5.5 million odd views in just two days are proof. His songs may be few and far between, but he makes music quite often. “I don’t publish it frequently but that’s going to change. I plan to release two more songs this year,” he says.

His next song is called Raahguzar and is about what it feels like to let someone go. The one after that is a romantic ballad, Saazish, which is about unrequitted love. “That’s my zone,” he says driving home the point that he is not raucous like his YouTube characters at all. “When I get bored of comedy, music is my escape. If a composition comes out of it, it’s a cherry on the top,” he adds.

NOT SO FUNNY OFFLINE

An episode of BB Ki Vines gets up to nine million views, but Bhuvan insists that he’s a bore in real life! “It gets really awkward when I meet strangers. Some people expect me to say something funny but I don’t,” he says. While Bhuvan’s friends are his sounding board for his skits, his parents have made peace with his kind of humour. “My dad has been a sport but my mum was initially furious because of the language and content. I asked her to appreciate the honesty that two friends cannot talk without abusing,” he says. “I have really dumbed them down in the episodes. Sometimes my dad asks me, ‘hum tujhe itne bevkoof lagte hain kya?’ he chuckles.

UPCOMING WORK

As of now, Bhuvan only wants to focus on BB Ki Vines. There are some Bollywood film integrations to look forward to, but films are not in the scheme of things for him yet. “I have offers but doing a movie would mean putting my show on a back burner for at least six months and I don’t want to do that,” he says adding that he is wary of risking it for a single Friday. “I think it will hurt my morale,” he reasons. And, television is a strict no-no because of censorship. “That’s not my kind of humour,” he shrugs.

WON’T BE TROLLED

No one on the social media has escaped trolling. How does he deal with that? “I scroll down!” he smiles, “The best thing to do is not react. If you reply to one, more people will follow just to get your comment,” says the musician and comic who was the voice of the cab driver Dopinder in the Hindi version of Deadpool 2 recently. As a parting shot, he says that he has come a long way from playing at restaurants for the applause and ek time ka free khaana to being followed by millions. “There were times when people would get drunk and ask me to shut up,” he recalls, “Now, getting so much love and attention feels great.”
