Exactly a week ago, my husband and I moved into a two bedroom flat. One friend insisted on knowing why we moved into a bigger apartment. “Oh my god, are you guys in the family way?” she squealed. “No! Are you mad?” “I don’t believe you. This conversation is not over!” Around the time our guests began to play a guessing game called ‘Is it a boy or a girl?’, I marched into the kitchen, got out a bottle of beer and gulped it down. Every other day, the morning newspaper has at least one article on some kid going berserk and murdering a teacher, friend or sibling, in the most macabre manner. Follow-up articles quote psychologists who say that TV programmes and video games are to blame for youngsters’ sudden thirst for violence. What chance do I have of preserving my child’s innocence at least till an appropriate age?

Children as young as three are enrolling for anger management classes: The image of a kicking fetus and a ruptured uterus has kept me wide awake many a night. Here’s a case in point: It’s been five years since she gave birth to her son but my dear friend, Mrs S, refuses to answer the question, ‘Was it all worth it?’ “Ask me at my death bed. A day that is not very far off,” she hoarsely whispered during a call.

Will the mere production of oxytocin (the hormone that has been identified as responsible for helping the ‘maternal instinct’ to kick in) help a mother surf through all these problems?

Mrs S is yet to get back to me. Her last email was titled ‘So, I am guessing Valium is not really for children?’
