A mother-daughter relationship has always been thrown open to much scrutiny and inspection, with new insights emerging every other day, in the form of surveys and reports. A recent study reasserted that mother-daughter relationship is the strongest of all. Well, not that we really need some rocket scientist to feed it to us.

In Sarojini Naidu’s poem 'Queen’s Rival', the exceptionally beautiful queen Gulnaar vies for a rival, urging the king to find her one. The king puts all his men on the task to scan the town for all beautiful women. But the queen could only find a rival in her little daughter as she watched her play around with her tresses. Even though the poem might seem to highlight the Queen’s innocuous envy, it is indeed an indication of the dependable mother-daughter relationship.

Psychologist Varkha Chulani explains that a mother and a daughter have an exceptionally strong bonding. “The bond is so strong because not only do they identify as a mother and a child, but also because they are of the same sex. So nobody but the daughter can understand the mother’s problems and vice versa. There is so much in common,” she explains.

Television actor Sayantani Ghosh says, “I completely agree that a mother and daughter relationship is the best. It’s selfless and giving. My mom is my true friend. I know when I’m low, I can turn to her.”

She adds, “I need to talk to my mom everyday because I don’t stay with her. I even have her number saved as SOS. We talk for hours about anything and everything under the sun. In fact, many of my friends wonder how I am so frank and comfortable with my mom!”

The countless researches only point to the fact how a mother-daughter relationship can be as complicated as an inexplicable one. But what one can’t deny is the essence of the bond — the selfless love that mothers and daughters have shared through generations.
