It’s a role reversal of sorts. You’ve probably noticed that your guy takes more time than you do to get ready when attending a party. The colour of his shirt, the print of the tie to match and the cut of the suit come into consideration, just like you break your head over which heels to wear.

A new British survey has revealed that the average man spends 18 minutes making himself look presentable. The study also said most men aspired to look like sportstar David Beckham, actors Daniel Craig and Colin Firth.

Taking into account the ads on various men’s beauty products like fairness creams, hair gels, hair sprays, deodorants and more, it’s possibly true in the city too, that men are spending more and more time on grooming.

Behavioural expert Dr Hemant Mittal explains the phenomenon saying that since the glamour guys are the primary role models, it’s natural that men tend to follow them.

“Grooming is no longer ‘being neat and clean’. It has become an essential aspect of social culture. Take for example, the fact that most urban men are now aware of the differences between deodorants, colognes, eau de toilette and eau de parfume, and know about the specific use of a fragrance depending on the occasion and time of the day.”

Funnyman Cyrus Sahukar laughs, “I think we should up the time and make it 20 minutes. I would also like to inform all men in India that secretly using their wives’, moms’, sisters’ or girlfriends’ expensive beauty products is totally cool. Just don’t get caught please!”

Actor Arjan Bajwa however feels that it’s important for people in his profession to look presentable. “Men have become conscious of their hair, their clothes...there are equal spa treatments for men. I precisely take 10 minutes including taking a shower. But the time may depend on what event you’re attending. Men’s beauty products make you aware of how to protect your hair or skin.”

Bollywood’s own hunk, actor John Abraham however admits to being not so vain. “I spend exactly two minutes in front of the mirror. I know people tag me sexy and think I spend a lot of time grooming myself, but that’s not how I work. I have a quick bath and take two minutes to dress up. I’m not somebody who will stand in front of the mirror for hours. I’m not vain and I’m proud of that,” he asserts.

Hemant also cautions, “Though it does instil a certain level of confidence, excessive involvement into personal grooming gives rise to a phenomenon called ‘body dysmorphic disorder’. It’s an obsession wherein an individual is never satisfied with his body, and spends majority of his time trying to find ways to resolve that flaw.”
