Cleopatra
US$44 million

Starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Brunton, this 1963 movie was a big-budget disaster, that cost a whopping US$44 million (US$320 million in today’s money). Taylor earned US$1 million for her work. Filming began in 1959 and by the Fall of 1961, over US$7 million had been spent. Taylor alone wore 65 different outfits in the film, one of which was fashioned from a 24-carat gold cloth. By the time the filming was completed, over 20,000 costumes had been created for Cleopatra.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
US$300 million

At US$300 million for the production, it’s the most expensive film ever produced by a long-shot and also one of the highest grossing, having more than tripled its budget at the box office with US$963,420,425. In addition to the great expenses being spent on the cast, scenes for this movie were filmed all over the world in places such as—Port Royal, Singapore, Isla de Muerta, Tortuga, Pelegosto and Isla Cruces (all four fictional). The cost of shipping the cast and crew all around the world certainly did not come cheap. The movie quickly became the most successful of 2007 and among the most successful films of all time, making almost a billion dollars at the box office.

At World’s End was the third of four Pirates of the Caribbean films. If you’re yearning for more, however, you’re in luck because a fifth film is scheduled to be released in 2015!

Tangled
US$ 260 million

It’s not often that big bucks are spent on a princess movie, which is why it’s so surprising that Disney’s 2010 production of Tangled—based on the story of Rapunzel—drew so many dollars.
It might seem strange that an animated movie could be so expensive to produce and in fact it’s by far the most-expensive animated film ever made; it took six years to produce. The main reason why the production was so complicated has to do with the mixed mediums of computer-generated imagery and traditional animation—all of which was worth it, when the film brought in US$ 591,794,936 at the box office, according to
Business Insider.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
US$225 million

After the success of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Disney knew a sequel would get an even bigger response. While there are mixed reports about the cost of production reaching a total of US$263 million, mainly on the special effects of Davy Jones, his crew, and his pet, the kraken, Wikipedia caps it at $225 million.

Spiderman 3
US$258 million

With its nine hundred visual special effects, it’s little wonder that the movie merited such a high budget. One movie source reported New York location shoots cost upwards of $1 million a day.
With a heavy-weight star cast like Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire, it sure was one expensive movie!
